Steven McCarthy - August
Born in Sault Ste. Marie and trained at the National Theatre School of Canada, Steven is a founding member of Bill Glassco’s Montreal Young Company and has collaborated with directors Chris Abraham, Richard Rose, Michael Hollingsworth, and Marti Maraden. He has played leading roles in films for Miramax, Columbia Tri-Star, Dreamworks and Shaftesbury. Revisited, a play he co-created with Michelle Monteith and Christian Barry, recently completed a tour of Canadian and international festivals garnering numerous awards, including one for Steven’s lead performance. Steven also co-founded the heavy funk band The Elastocitizens. This fall, Steven is playing Horatio in Necessary Angel’s upcoming production of Hamlet.
Ieva Lucs – Julie
Ieva is a graduate of the National Theatre School and Stratford Conservatory. Her theatre credits include Juliet in Juliet (and Romeo) for LKTYP, Sarah in Trying for Persephone Theatre, Agafya in The Marriage for Talk Is Free Theatre, Hesterpryne in The Pessimist for Tarragon Theatre, Clea in The Scene for Pilot Group (for which she was named one of 2007 Best Individual Performances for Eye Magazine). Her film credits include an appearance in Atom Egoyan’s upcoming film Adoration. Upcoming, in March 2009 Ieva will be starring in a remount of Layne Coleman’s one person show Tijuana Cure, also for Theatre Smash.
Igor Bauersima - Playwright
Igor Bauersima, born at Prague in 1964, grew up in Switzerland and has worked since 1969 as an architect, musician, and writer and director for the cinema and theatre. In 1993 he and actors Pascal Ulli, Alexander Seibt, and Ingrid Sattes founded the OFF OFF Bühne, an alternative theatre group. Since then he has written and staged nine plays for this company.
Romeo Candido – Video Designer
Romeo Candido is a Canadian born Filipino filmmaker, composer, musician, and producer. His directorial feature length film debut, Lolo’s Child, opened the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival in 2002 and won the prestigious Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema (Cinemanila International Film Festival, Philippines. Romeo has directed several short documentaries, including Dancers! Pick Up Your Bamboos! an homage to Filipino folk dance, and KUYA Medley, about a Toronto based Filipino R&B singing group. His multimedia show, The Romeo Candido Karaoke Show, has been mounted in Vancouver, Chicago, and Washington DC. In 2004, Romeo composed the original score and sound design for Banana Boys (fu-GEN Theatre Company), which earned him a Dora Award nomination under the Best Original Score/Sound Design category. In May of 2005, Romeo directed his first professional theatre production of The Romance of Magno Rubio, a play about five Filipino farm labourers in California in the 1930’s (Carlos Bulosan Theatre Company). His most recent projects include fu-GEN Theatre Company’s Singkil at Factory Theatre and People Power at Theatre Passe Muraille.
Kinnon Elliott – Stage Manager
Recent credits include Stage Manager for Theatre Smash’s Norway.Today and Tiny Dynamite and Assistant Stage Manager for A Whistle in the Dark (Company Theatre remount and tour to St. John’s, Newfoundland). Other Assistant Stage Management credits include: Seussical: A Musical (LKTYP) and The Comedy of Errors (CanStage Dream in High Park). Apprentice Stage Management credits include: Care, Humble Boy, The Optimists (Tarragon Theatre); The Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare Works); The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine (Theatre Columbus); Unless (CanStage); A Whistle in the Dark (Company Theatre); Three Men on a Horse, Floyd Collins (Shaw Festival); Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang (LKTYP); and The Tempest (Festival of Classics). Robin is a graduate of the Scenography Program (National Theatre School) and the Costume Studies Program (Dalhousie University). Select design credits include set and costumes: I,Claudia (Theatre & Co./Saidye Bronfman), My Fellow Creatures (Absit Omen/Buddies in Bad Time Theatre), What Lies Before Us (Crow’s Theatre), A Number (The Canadian Stage Company), Tiny Dynamite (Theatre Smash), The Red Priest, Perfect Pie, and Trying (Thousand Islands Playhouse). Set Design: Love You Forever…and More Munsch (Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People), The Danish Play (Nightwood Theatre), Mayhem and the Naked Play (Theatre Columbus) and A Man of No Importance (Acting Up Stage). Costume Design: Spirit Horse (Roseneath Theatre), Hotel Loopy, The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine (Theatre Columbus), and Get Set for Life Live (CBC). Robin received a Dora Mavor Moore award for best costume design for 36 Views (Actors Repertory Company). Upcoming: Robin will be designing set and costumes for The Russian Play/Essays (TIP).
Michael Laird – Sound Designer
Michael’s work has been heard in theatre productions throughout North America. Elizabeth Nutting - Assistant Set & Costume Designer
Elizabeth Nutting graduated in 2002 with a BAH in Drama from Queen’s University. After working at The Banff Centre, she furthered her education at the Toronto School of Art. Since graduating with a Diploma of Fine Arts in 2007, Elizabeth has been pursuing a career in set design. In addition to designing for the theatre, Elizabeth is working as an installation artist using theatre scripts as a springboard for her art. Recent designs include: Production Designer, Lost Daughter; Associate Set Designer, My Fellow Creatures; Assistant Set Designer, The Banff Centre; and Assistant Set and Costume Designer, Tiny Dynamite.
Joshua Van Tassel - Composer
A percussion graduate of the music programs at St Francis Xavier University, Humber College, and the Banff Centre for the Arts, Joshua currently lives in Toronto, and plays with a variety of unique musical acts such as Valery Gore, stop.sie.resuscitate, the Centaurs, Elana McMurtry, Ben Gunning, the Great Canadian Nobodies, Sarah Kurtis, and many others. He has also written music and designed sound for the play Expiry Dating (winner of the 2007 Toronto Fringe Best New Play award) and for Norman Lup-Man Yeung’s JASMINE (Summerworks 2007).
Kate Ann Vandermeer – Production Manager
Kate Ann is currently employed as the Production Coordinator for the Canadian Opera Company. Although an actor/singer her whole life, she has been honing her skills as a Production Manager over the last couple of years working with companies such as Toronto Youth Theatre, Alliesallover and Little Red Theatre. Kate has previously worked with Theatre Smash as the backstage assistant and Apprentice Production Manager on their inaugural production of Tiny Dynamite. Kate Ann is a graduate of Queen’s University’s Drama and Music program.
