We’ll be at the new cafe at The Theatre Centre, and will have a variety of special guests to help us get our romance on: choreographer Jane Johanson will teach us to salsa our way into our lovers’ hearts and her mum, renowned sex educator Sue Johanson (of Sex With Sue fame), will share her thoughts on the more intimate side of love.  

So bring your dancing shoes and that sex question you’ve always wanted to ask, and come meet the team for some drinks, munchies, and a whole lot of romance!

Our official press release was sent today! Tickets are now on sale for Theatre Smash’s production of A Boy Called Newfoundland (running March 26-April 11 at Tarragon Extra Space), and we are finally able to share the names of our all-star cast and creative team. We could not be more excited to welcome these amazing artists to the Theatre Smash community:

Patrick Kwok-Choon (pictured above) plays Newfoundland “Flounder” Willow, an awkward 15-year-old cadet. A loner who is scared of being alone, his life revolves around his family, his synthesizer, his French-camp love Evelyn, and his parents’ family business – The Romantic Times, a self-published newspaper. When his mother returns home from her second honeymoon without her husband, Newfoundland and his sisters struggle to recreate the family and home they once knew.

The cast is led by veteran stage performers Martha Burns and Layne Coleman as Flounder’s parents, with Natasha Greenblatt and Lara Jean Chorostecki playing his sisters. Martin Happer is divinity-student Hadley and Vivien Endicott-Douglas is Flounder’s crush Evelyn.

Set and costumes, and lights will be designed by frequent Theatre Smash collaborators Robin Fisher and Jason Hand, respectively, with John Gzowski joining us for the first time as Sound Designer. Our stage manager will be Melissa Novecosky.

With more than 110 attendees and more than $3000 raised to put towards A Boy Called Newfoundland, we deem the evening a success!   Most importantly, we were so pleased to bring a community of Smash supporters together – to eat yummy food, drink delicious libations, hear amazing music and spoken word performances, and most importantly, to kiss a fish and eat bologna.  Yes, that’s right – the Screech In was definitely a highlight of the evening.

We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year – at a romance themed Valentine’s party and of course at the show itself.

We are incredibly proud to announce that BOTH of Theatre Smash’s 2008 – 2009 Productions received Dora Mavor Moore nominations in the Independent Theatre category.

Steven McCarthy was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male for his role as August in Norway.Today.

Layne Coleman’s Tijuana Cure was nominated for Outstanding New Play or New Musical.

We are so thrilled for both of these Theatre Smash artists and very proud of the entire creative teams for both Norway.Today and Tijuana Cure.

Finally, we’d love to send out congratulations to all of the Dora Nominees this year.

The Doras honour excellence in Theatre, Dance & Opera in Toronto. Dora Mavor Moore was a well-loved teacher and director who helped establish Canadian professional theatre in the 1930s and 1940s.
