Enter Steven McCarthy to save the day! Two weeks into the rehearsal process, Steven McCarthy has assumed the lead role of August in Norway.Today. Marc Bendavid has been cast as a guest star in a television series whose shoot schedule, unfortunately, directly conflicts with the performance dates of the show. We are thrilled to be working once again with Steven, who starred in Theatre Smash’s inaugural production, Tiny Dynamite, to critical acclaim in 2006, and we wish Marc all the best with his upcoming shoot. Rock Climbing

We finished table work today and actually did the whole first scene up on our feet! Accomplishment. The next couple of days in this rehearsal hall will be spent working through the play like this before we get to Tarragon next week and actually have the set. Very exciting. In other news, we took a group field trip to Rock Oasis yesterday to try out some heights and some rock climbing moves. 40 feet definitely gives a good approximation of “really really high” and letting yourself sit while the person belaying you takes over is a somewhat unnatural feeling, if an incredible adrenaline rush. Off to visit *Hotshot galllery, where Monday’s Summer Splash party will take place. Hope to see you there!

Rehearsals have begun! We started Monday with a small and friendly read-through and have been plugging away at table work and asking the many questions that arise with this play. It’s going to be quite the journey to figure out the answers, and it feels good to finally be in the rehearsal room with the minds that are going to bring it all together. Today we went on a field trip to the top of a nearby building - in the distance was the CN Tower which is just shy of the actual height of Pulpit Rock. Imagine jumping off the CN Tower….

Robin Fisher is our Set & Costume Designer. You will remember her outstanding “dock” set from Tiny Dynamite, for which she was nominated for a Dora Award. Robin is a graduate of the Scenography Program at the National Theatre School and she has worked with Crow’s Theatre, CanStage, Theatre Smith-Gilmour, Nightwood, and Theatre Columbus, among others.

Norway.Today is inspired by a true story. A young Norwegian man and a young Austrian girl met on a chatroom called alt.suicide.holiday (ASH), formed a pact, and went to Pulpit Rock, where their tent, some beer, and a stereo were eventually found. Several pacts facilitated by this particular website caught the attention of the press - and the chatroom became the scapegoat. The magazine Wired ran a series of 3 articles about this website and the online suicide pact phenomenon. Read the first article here.
